(AME Info (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 14--ANDROID SECURES 31 percent SMARTPHONE MARKET SHARE: Global research firm Gartner has said smartphones have captured an estimated 44 percent of all mobile phone sales in the fourth quarter of last year, with Android smartphones taking 31 percent of all mobile phone shipments and iOS in second place at 9 percent, Forbes has reported. Android smartphones grew 88 percent year-on-year with iOS at 23 percent, while Blackberry and Symbian (Nokia) reported 44 percent and 85 percent declines year-on-year, respectively, the report said.



OMANTEL REPORTS 4.1 percent RISE IN NET INCOME: Omantel has said its net profit for 2012 rose 4.1 percent to OR116.2m, compared with OR111.6m in the previous year, Times of Oman has reported. The company's revenue grew by 1.4 percent to OR458.9m from OR452.6m during the period. Despite the challenging market conditions and decline in revenue from international calls and SMS, last year saw an increase in the number of total subscribers to 3.831 million, an increase of 8.5 percent, which includes subscribers of its subsidiary company Worldcall Telecoms Limited, Omantel.

BLACKBERRY THANKS DEVELOPERS WITH LIMITED EDITION Z10: BlackBerry is preparing to shipping a limited edition version of the Z10 to selected developers who have created applications for its new BlackBerry 10 OS, PC World has reported. The company is planning to distribute 12,000 units of the device as a thank-you to developers, BlackBerry said. The first units will begin to ship in five to seven weeks, it said.
