D-49 board approves Sand Creek High School innovation planFeb 15, 2013 (The Gazette (Colorado Springs - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Falcon School District 49 board approved the innovation plan for Sand Creek High School at the regular meeting Thursday Feb. 14 night. The plan, if approved by the state, will allow the school to implement a list of changes. A freshmen academy would focus on improving basic academic skills of incoming ninth-graders. An IB Diploma Program would complement programs in the elementary and middle schools in the zone. Proposed pathways for students include specific classes to allow students to focus on interests and strengths. The topics include media and communication, visual and performing arts, and engineering and technology. The board also approved a contract with GOAL Academy, a statewide online school for students in ninth through 12th grades. The school had been chartered through the state agency. Another vote approved a slightly changed organizational chart that clarified responsibilities in district leadership, as well as human resources and information technology. Several parents and board members were disappointed in an item that was not voted on as planned. Board Vice President Chris Wright made the successful motion to table the vote on the district's strategic plan. He said it should wait until a chief education officer is hired so he or she can be part of it. Board President Tammy Harold said 25-30 D-49 employees have spent a lot of time working on the plan, which includes a vision for the district looking ahead 15 years and a focus on performance in the next five years. ___ (c)2013 The Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
