RCC honors Chrestman; contract OK'd for Hilbert

LUMBERTON, Feb 15, 2013 (The Robesonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Robeson Community College trustees on Thursday honored Charles Chrestman, the college's retiring president, by naming the campus workforce development center in his honor.

The designation of the building as the Charles V. Chrestman Workforce Development Center was included in a three-page resolution passed by the trustees recognizing Chrestman for his service to the college and community during the past 10 years.

"The Robeson Community College Workforce Development Center is now named the Charles V. Chrestman Workforce Development Center in honor of his outstanding leadership for the college, and for his untiring commitment to workforce development and economic development for Robeson County and its citizens," the resolution reads.

Thursday was Chrestman's last meeting with the trustees before his retirement becomes effective March 1.

"You have been a great board to work with and I will be always grateful for you letting me come here to practice my career," Chrestman told the board. "The one reason I came here is that there is a lot of opportunity (for college and community growth). You just have to reach out and take advantage of it." George Regan, the board's chairman, credited Chrestman's leadership for the college's growth andaccomplishments.

"I will miss you and the trustees will miss you," Regan said. "RCC is a better place for you being here." During their meeting, the trustees also approved a three-year contract for Pamela T. Hilbert, who takes over as the college's new president on March 1. Hilbert's appointment as president is pending approval by the State Board of Community Colleges, which meets today.

According to Regan, Hilbert will be paid a state base salary of $109,000. She also receives a $15,000 local supplement from RCC. The supplement is funded from local funds, he said.

Hilbert is the current vice president of academic affairs at Pitt Community College in Greenville, a position she has held since June 2006. She was vice president of instruction and student support at Carteret Community College in Morehead City from 1999 to 2006, and from 1996 to 1999 she served as dean of the evening division for Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh. She also served as the recruiter-instructional supervisor for WTCC from 1989 to 1996.

Chrestman told The Robesonian that although he has only met Hilbert one time, he is familiar with her reputation within the community college system.

"From what I've heard, she is an excellent choice for president. She will jump right in and do a good job," he said. "She's different from me, and that can be good for the college." ___ (c)2013 The Robesonian (Lumberton, N.C.) Visit The Robesonian (Lumberton, N.C.) at Distributed by MCT Information Services
