BRIEF: Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe election rescheduledMASHPEE, Feb 14, 2013 (Cape Cod Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's election has been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24, at Mashpee High School. Last weekend's snowstorm forced the tribe to cancel the election. At a meeting Wednesday night, the tribal council passed an ordinance allowing the election committee to schedule a new date waiving the 30 days required by the tribe's constitution. The election is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., but only elders can vote for the first hour. Polls are open for all other eligible voters from 2 to 4 p.m. Five seats are on the ballot in the hotly contested race, including chairman, vice chairman, treasurer, secretary and an at-large tribal council position. A total of 17 candidates are running and all of the races are contested. The election has possible implications for the tribe's pursuit of a $500 million casino in Taunton.
