BRIEF: Dakota County: MVTA ridership steady in 2012

Feb 08, 2013 (Pioneer Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Minnesota Valley Transit Authority ridership held steady in 2012, with strong showings in the lines serving the University of Minnesota and the Mall of America.

The organization announced its results for the year Friday, Feb. 8. About 2.5 million people used the public transit network, which serves Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan and other southern metro suburbs.

Ridership on the bus line between Apple Valley and the university was up 47 percent from 2011. Ridership for lines that bring urbanites to suburban workplaces was up 12 percent.

Express lines from Apple Valley and Burnsville into downtown Minneapolis and a Mall of America line drew the most riders.

The MVTA expects a boost this year from the Red Line rapid transit bus line on Cedar Avenue, set to open this summer.
