They've got the beat

Feb 08, 2013 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Twirling in the air, twisting on the ground, the Panther Paws are set to perform the 11th annual Dance Explosion tonight at Permian High School's auditorium.

Panther Paw coach Kristin Carter said about 150 varsity and junior varsity students will take part in the dance, along with some guest performances in the 2-hour set.

Parents and other viewers can expect several solo and duet acts. Though Carter and the performers wanted to keep a tight lid on some of the dances they plan to perform tonight, Carter said they planned a "statement piece" this year that the Panther Paws hope would resonate with the audience.

"This is a really cool, really cool piece... and I hope it makes a big impact on people," Carter said.

"It's really going to be close to home for some people," said Taylor Rosson, 17, a PHS senior and captain of the Permian Panther Paws. She said the piece will tell a story.

Describing the entire performance and the work that went into it, senior lieutenant officer Kristen Bartley with the Paws said, "this whole year's about power ... it goes hand in hand (with) the team.

"It's just really intense," Kristen said.

Tickets for the show were $7 for those who bought it in advance, though if you're reading this and you still don't have a ticket, they're $10 at the door. Carter said $2 from each ticket bought at the door will go to the Harmony Home Children's Advocacy Center.
