BRIEF: Rabid raccoon found in Sandestin areaFeb 05, 2013 (Northwest Florida Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- MIRAMAR BEACH -- A rabid raccoon that died after fighting with a dog has tested positive for rabies in the Sandestin area, according to the Walton County Health Department. The family pet did not have a current rabies vaccination and was euthanized, the department reported. Florida law requires all dogs and cats older than four months be current on their rabies vaccination. In Florida, pets are unvaccinated when their rabies vaccine has expired or was not given by a licensed veterinarian. Two animal attacks were investigated last week involving an unvaccinated pet in Miramar Beach and a vaccinated pet in Santa Rosa Beach. If a wild animal bites or fights with a pet, call the health department at 892-8021 or Walton County Animal Control at 892-8682.
