BRIEF: Moyock sweepstakes cafes open, then close

MOYOCK, Feb 05, 2013 (The Virginian-Pilot - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two Moyock Internet sweepstakes cafes opened for a few days before closing again Monday as a North Carolina judge considered the legality of new software.

In a Davidson County hearing held Monday, Judge Robert Johnson removed a restraining order that prevented law enforcement agencies from closing Internet cafes using International Internet Technologies software. The cafes include The Cyber Center and Earthlink Internet Cafe in Moyock, said Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson.

Over the weekend, the parking lots were full at both shops as they were before Internet sweepstakes cafes were declared illegal in North Carolina and forced to close by Jan. 3. At least 15 gaming sites operated in Currituck County last year.

Judge Johnson also dismissed a lawsuit by ITT and a Davidson County business that claimed the new software did not break the law.
