Jamaica breaks ground on rare-earth projectKINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) _ Jamaican and Japanese officials on Monday launched a pilot project designed to investigate whether rare-earth elements can be commercially extracted from the island's bauxite waste. Researchers with Japan's Nippon Light Metal Co. Ltd. believe they have found high concentrations of rare-earth elements in the island's red mud, a byproduct of bauxite refining into alumina, the basic material for manufacturing aluminum. NBCUniversal gathers cable channels under 1 execNEW YORK (AP) _ NBCUniversal has united its cable channels under the command of long-time executive Bonnie Hammer, leaving Lauren Zalaznick, who previously controlled Bravo, Oxygen, Style and Sprout, to focus on innovation and emerging technology initiatives. NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke announced the shakeup and the creation of the Cable Entertainment Group in an internal memo Monday. And now, The Washington Post is joining the chorus, revealing the discovery of a sophisticated cyberattack in 2011. New BlackBerry to be released in US in mid-MarchTORONTO (AP) _ The chief executive of Research In Motion says he's disappointed the new BlackBerry won't be released in the United States until mid-March, but he says early data suggests sales in the U.K. are above expectations. Thorsten Heins said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press that he would be lying if he said he wasn't disappointed in the mid-March U.S. release date.
