Duke Energy's Bad Creek Hydro Station wins Conservation Award; Outdoor Classroom recognized

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SALEM, S.C. -- Employees at Duke Energy's Bad Creek Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Station are being honored today at the South Carolina Wildlife Federation's annual awards banquet for their leadership in conservation and educational programs.

The employees were recognized for their leadership in the Wildlife and Industry Together (WAIT) program, in Trout Unlimited's "Scoutin' for Trout," and in National Hunting and Fishing Day events.

They were also honored for introducing an educational program at the Bad Creek Outdoor Classroom.

Opened in May of 2012, the Outdoor Classroom, a covered shelter equipped with tables and a white board, is surrounded by two trails, a butterfly garden, a weather station and wildlife feeding stations. There, students can learn about local flora and fauna, as well as how Duke Energy generates electricity through a pumped storage system, using the same water over and over again, making more efficient use of water resources.

Duke Energy employees, retirees and volunteers invested more than 200 hours into the outdoor education facility, meant to help students learn about nature while getting them out of the traditional classroom environment.
