Woman suffers minor injuries in Highway 65 accident

Feb 01, 2013 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A multi-vehicle accident on Highway 65 north of Wheatland sent one person to the hospital this morning and caused traffic delays for nearly an hour.

According to the Yuba-Sutter office of the California Highway Patrol, John Post, 51, of Yuba City, was driving a 2012 GMC truck north on Highway 65 when he stopped to make a left onto Dry Valley Levee Road at 9:23 a.m.

David Caudillo, 26, of Wheatland, said he was driving behind Post in a 1997 Dodge minivan when Post braked.

"I stopped, and the yellow truck behind me clipped me and rolled over," Caudillo said. "I jumped out, because I was worried about him." Behind Caudillo, Jonathan Huggins, 49, of Rocklin was driving the 1996 Ford Ranger truck, which continued after clipping the van and ran into the back of Post's truck, causing the Ranger to roll over and come to rest on its side on northbound 65.

According to the CHP, it was not clear why Huggins didn't stop in time.

Caudillo said he wasn't sure how many times Huggins' truck rolled. "It happened so fast. I saw him slowing down. I was surprised he didn't see him," he said.

At the same time, Krystal Humphrey, 29, of Oroville, was headed south on 65 approaching Dry Creek Levee Road in a 2006 Chevrolet Trailbazer and swerved off the highway to avoid the accident, going down an embankment and into a tree on the west side of 65.

Humphrey, who said she had pain in her arm, was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. No one else was injured in the accident, and neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to play a role, according to the CHP.

The accident closed 65 going north for about 45 minutes, while the CHP rerouted traffic going south onto Dry Creek Levee Road. All lanes were reopened by 10:15 a.m.

In addition to the CHP, Wheatland police, Wheatland Fire Department and the Yuba County Sheriff's Department responded to the accident.
