Bowl season arrives for area nonprofits

Feb 01, 2013 (The Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Some area fundraising efforts are hoping to share the Super Bowl spotlight Sunday.

The Community Arts Network of Oneonta is serving up its ninth annual Chili Bowl, a fundraiser that features restaurants submitting concoctions for a contest. The noon to 4 p.m. event at the Wilber Mansion, 11 Ford Ave., will feature the sale of bowls to hold chili for guests who wish to taste several different kinds of chili.

The Wilber Mansion Jam Band will play music Sunday afternoon, presenters said, and Susquehanna Valley Quilts will display quilts. The event will raise money to support restoring Wilber Mansion and art education scholarships. For more information, call 432-2070.

The kickoff for Super Bowl 47 is set for 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

As in past years, faith communities will collect contributions to support food sites and feeding programs. According to the Hunger Coalition of Otsego County, the Souper Bowl of Caring was started in 1990 by a youth group in Columbia, S.C., to collect money and canned food for the needy at a time with people gathered for a national sporting event.

The Hunger Coalition, a network that shares information, is encouraging people gathering for Super Bowl parties in public and private settings to collect money to support the 24 food sites throughout the county. Also, some faith communities traditionally have passed soup pots to take a special collection.

Food assistance programs in Otsego County have experienced increased demands from residents because of economic circumstances, including the loss or cuts in income, emergencies and other expenses, a coalition flier said.

In Oneonta, donations may be made to local pantries, which are at the Salvation Army, St. James' Episcopal Church Food Pantry and St. Mary's Church Food Pantry. In the city, feeding programs provide a hot meal each day of the week -- Monday through Friday at the Lord's Table, Saturday at Saturday's Bread and Sunday at the Salvation Army.

For a list of the 21 food pantries in Otsego County or more information, call Mary Ann Hartmann at 226-1785.
