Huelskamp gets highest marks in Kansas delegation by conservative scorecard

Feb 01, 2013 (The Wichita Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Rep. Tim Huelskamp has been named a "Sentinel" of freedom by a national group that scores the conservatism of members of Congress.

The scorecard by the group Heritage Action for America ranks lawmakers on their conservatism, based on their votes on bills identified by the group as being of particular interest to conservative Americans.

The group is currently urging Congress members to vote "no" on separate bills that would raise taxes on Americans making more than $400,000 a year; provide funding for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts; and revise Senate rules to make it harder for senators to block action through filibusters.

In a statement issued by his office, Huelskamp was quoted as saying: "This scorecard separates the lawmakers who talk like conservatives and those who act like conservatives. I will continue to be the tip of the spear fighting for the conservative values the voters of the Big First District elected me to represent." Huelskamp's quote closely paralleled Heritage Action's own news release that characterized the award as a scorecard for conservatives that "reveals which lawmakers talk like a conservative and which ones act like a conservative." The Heritage Action news release also quoted the group's chief executive officer, Michael A. Needham, as saying: "These Sentinels represent the tip of the spear in Washington, but they are not alone. All across the country citizen Sentinels are acting as America's firewall for freedom." Huelskamp, R-Fowler, received a 92 percent rating from the organization. He is the only member of the Kansas congressional delegation to receive the Sentinel award.

Twenty-three of the 435 members of the House and six of 100 senators scored 90 percent or above on Heritage Action's scorecard to qualify for the Sentinel award.

The other Kansas members' scores were: 4th District Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, 85 percent; 2nd District Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, 79 percent; 3rd district Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Overland Park, 77 percent; Sen. Jerry Moran, 74 percent; and Sen. Pat Roberts, 65 percent.
