Recruit Report: Montour's Wilson picks basketball

Feb 01, 2013 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Devin Wilson still doesn't know where he wants to attend college, but at least he now knows what sport he wants to play in college.

Wilson, a senior at Montour, had been debating whether to play basketball or football and he had scholarship offers from Division I colleges in both sports. But Wilson decided recently he will play basketball.

"I liked football, but I don't know if I ever had that desire to work on football and practice it every day," said Wilson, who set a WPIAL record for most receptions in a career. "But in basketball, I want to go to practice every single day. I want to get shots up every day, work on my ballhand-ling and my game." Another reason Wilson chose basketball is because more college doors are open for him in basketball.

"Ever since I said I'm definitely playing basketball, four or five new schools have called -- DePaul, Rutgers, George Mason," said Wilson, a 6-foot-4 point guard. "George Mason just offered me a scholarship last week." St. Bonaventure and Western Michigan also have offered scholarships and a few other schools are interested. Although Duquesne has not offered a scholarship, Duquesne coaches have been to some Montour games this season. Duquesne assistant coach Rich Glessman was at Montour's game Sunday against Shaler.

Wilson isn't sure when he will make a college decision.

"If a school wows me enough, I'll choose right there," he said. "But we'll see how it all pans out. Hopefully I know something sooner than later." Recruiting notes --Blackhawk girls basketball player Chassidy Omogrosso made a verbal commitment to Pitt last week. Omogrosso is only a sophomore, but she is one of two standout sophomore point guards in the WPIAL who already have made college decisions. Seton-LaSalle's Cassidy Walsh chose Duquesne in August.

--A sleeper in the WPIAL football junior class might be New Castle's Malik Hooker. He has been known more for his basketball ability, but Hooker played high school football for the first time last season and showed plenty of promise as a receiver. Penn State coach Bill O'Brien was at New Castle last week to look at Hooker.

--Clairton football standout Tyler Boyd made a verbal commitment to Pitt in early January, but visited West Virginia last weekend and might go to Tennessee this weekend.

--Gregg Garrity Jr., North Allegheny's leading receiver, will walk on to the Penn State team in the fall. His father, Gregg Sr., had a highly successful career at Penn State as a walk-on in the early 1980s.
