BBC publishes second annual equality report 'Developing Our Story: Diversity at the BBC 2012'

Feb 01, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The BBC has published the second annual equality report 'Developing Our Story: Diversity at the BBC 2012' which charts the Corporation's progress against the objectives and targets set in 2011.

The objectives and targets set in 2011 can be viewed here: bbc.co.uk/diversity/strategy/documents.html The report covers both our approach to employment and also how we work with different audiences and use diversity as a creative opportunity to bring authenticity, new voices and vitality to the fore.

Inspired by our audiences, we continue to listen to their views and have conducted workshops and commissioned new research to keep us focused on what they know and love. Chairing the Cultural Diversity Network for the second and final year, we have worked with our industry partners to ensure we reflect British life back to our audiences in the UK. We have also continued to focus on the need for more female voices in news and current affairs. Our work with the Expert Women training days has been a central part of this activity ( bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/posts/Expert-Womens-Day-demystifying-the-media-and-boosting-skills ). In addition to this, we are looking at ways to develop new disabled presenting talent.

Diversity doesn't just exist on the fringe of our thinking -- it continues to be truly part and parcel of who we are and what we do." The report makes clear our priorities for the year ahead including new audience research, a deeper look at the diversity of our portrayal on-screen and a concentration on diversifying our senior leaders. We will also be paying particular attention to increasing the number of disabled people within the organisation.

The BBC remains steadfast in its determination to keep diversity centre stage and make further progress against our strategy -- from the authenticity of our portrayal of the UK today to a workforce that reflects the society in which it operates.
