LC-M student detained after possessing firearms

Jan 31, 2013 (The Orange Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- LITTLE CYPRESS -- A 15-year-old Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School student was arrested for carrying a weapon at about 3 a.m. Thursday by officers from the Orange Police Department.

Officers were notified at 2:47 a.m. the juvenile had ran away from home and the student was later located and in possession of a handgun which was taken from his residence without permission.

A press release sent out by OPD reported the juvenile then led officers to an abandoned house where he had stashed a .40 caliber handgun, a 12 gauge shotgun and ammunition. The release adds these items were also taken from his home and that another friend was pallning to runaway with him.

Officers were able to make contact with the other juvenile, a 14-year-old student at LC-M High School, at his home. The friend, according to the press release, told police he had planned on running away but did not know of the firearms.

The 15-year-old was ordered to be taken to juvenile detention facility and the 14-year-old was later released to his parents after being interviewed by officers.

LC-M CISD officials were notified of the incident and quickly notified parents of the arrest by a voice message through the Internet and email.

The message reported the student was in custody and at one point did pose a threat to the campus.

"Police officers are confident there is not a current threat to the safety of our students or staff," the message said.

Classes were held at normal time Thursday and increased security was to be seen on campus, according to the message.
