Crum having fine season for Logan wrestling team

Jan 31, 2013 (The Logan Banner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Alex Crum has separated himself from the pack over the last few weeks.

The junior Logan High School wrestler has compiled an impressive 22-5 record so far with 10 pins, seven decisions and two major decisions.

Crum has placed in all but one tournament he has attended.

He also took second at the Ohio Valley Duals, first in his weight class at Riverside's Warrior Tournament and Wahama's Falcon Invitationals, third at the 37th-annual WSAZ Invitational and second at this past weekend's Carl Stover Invitational at Clay County.

Last week, Crum received a ranking of eighth in Class AAA at 195 pounds by the West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association.

"His record reflects well on his hard work and dedication," Logan wrestling coach Jason Davis said. "Crum stands a very good chance of repeating his trip to state. Last season, as a sophomore, Alex placed third in Region 4 to earn a berth in state championships." Last season, Crum finished with an impressive 37-8 record, including one win at state.

Crum, of course, isn't the only wrestler on Logan's squad.

Seniors Dustin Thompson (126 pounds) and Cody Abbott (120 pounds, 16-6), juniors Aric "Chance" Ooten (220 pounds (17-6), Tyler Workman (132 pounds) and freshmen Jordan Oney (182 pounds, 10-9) and Jon Workman (285 pounds) all make up Logan's small but dedicated team.

"At the beginning of the season we had 12 of 14 weight classes filled with extra wrestlers in four or five weights," Davis said. "We had 24 wrestlers on our roster, but some of those had been injured or were lost to grades. Others just decided to lift weights for other sports. That's what makes these seven special." Thompson has battled back from a broken arm he sustained early in the season at practice.

"Dustin has worked hard all year long to be successful this season, trying to achieve everyone's goal -- to get to the state tournament," Coach Davis said.

Davis said Abbott has battled weight problems.

"He has battled with his weight," Davis said. "He now wrestles at 120 pounds down from 132 early in season. He is extremely strong for his size. His strength has been the difference in many of his wins. Juniors Alex Crum, Tyler Workman and Aric 'Chance' Ooten are the solid in their own right. Alex and Tyler were among the first group of sixth-graders who wrestled for Logan Middle and will have competed in high school and middle school more than any other wrestler in Logan High School history. Chance has continually improved over his high school career and his become an experienced wrestler with an impressive 17-6 record." Davis also had praise for his two freshmen.

"Jordan Oney adn Jon Workman are also hard workers and unfortunately have had to overcome illness and injury this season," he said.

The Logan wrestling team has two more competitions scheduled before the Class AAA regionals. This weekend, Logan travels to Lincoln County to wrestling on Friday. Then next weekend, LHS is slated to finish up the regular season at the Bob Runyon Invitational at Winfield High School.

The Class AAA Region 4 championships are set for Feb. 16 at Cabell Midland. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will earn a berth in the state championships on Feb. 21-23 at the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington.
