Minister: Azerbaijan to make considerable ICT achievements in 2013


Jan 31, 2013 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Creating a high-tech park in Azerbaijan will stimulate increased production of high-end technological products, Azerbaijani Economic Development Minister Shahin Mustafayev's article published in the newspaper Azerbaijan said on Wednesday.



Mustafayev added that at present some 70 per cent of the population uses the Internet and 50 per cent broadband Internet n Azerbaijan.

According to the Global Information Technology Report -- 2012 of the World Economic Forum, Azerbaijan on this index is the leader among the CIS countries which exceeds the world average indices two-fold. Moreover, Azerbaijan ranks 61st among 142 countries on the Networked Readiness Index, the article says.


Mustafayev said that announcing 2013 as the Year of ICT in Azerbaijan, by launching the first telecommunication satellite as well as other work being implemented in many ICT areas, gives reason to say that great achievements will be reached this year in the field of information and communication technologies.

As of 2012, the growth of the ICT sector in Azerbaijan amounted to 18 per cent. Every three years, starting since 2004, the country experienced a twofold increase in the ICT sector which exceeded the world average indices by 2.5 times. Last year the volume of investments in the ICT sector exceeded $400 million.
