TED Android App Selected by Google as a Top App of 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan 31, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) -- via PRWEB - The new TED Android app gained important recognition last month after Google selected it as one of their top 12 apps of 2012 in the Google Play Store. Criteria included apps that "achieved a great combination of utility, beauty, and accessibility." Developed by Mercury Intermedia located in Nashville, TN, the award echoes both Nashville's surge into the national spotlight and Mercury's legacy of award-winning apps.

"Mercury and Nashville have been flying under the radar for years," said Bill Tallent, CEO of Mercury. "It takes excellent design and development to make both a great app and a great community, so we see this as a victory for both." With the TED Android app, the nonprofit devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading" can continue to share TED Talks for free with even more people. Made for the mobile audience, it provides features such as off-line viewing, local meta-data search, and foreign language subtitles to make it a delightful user experience, earning an average app rating of 4.5 with over 15,000 reviews.

"TED's audience is both online and on their mobile devices," said June Cohen, Executive Producer of TED Media. "We wanted to ensure people could easily access TED Talks and TED content wherever they are, and appreciate Google recognizing the success and reach of this app." In addition to the video content, TED also provides a curated audio stream through the app. It is designed for all Android devices, including screen specific designs for phones, tablets and e-readers, even the split screen Sony Tablet P.

It is a surprise to many that the app was designed and developed in Nashville. However, Mercury Intermedia has garnered many accolades over the years, including awards from the Emmys, Webbys, AIGA, and Communication Arts. Mercury blends excellent user experience design with robust client and server coding to deliver a mobile experience that delights and engages the user, vital to growing and retaining mobile audiences. Accustomed to serving out-of-town clients, Mercury has seen increased local interest as the local business ecosystem growth continues to outpace the nation's. Nashville has received a flurry of mentions in the national press, including the Forbes, Wall Street Journal, and CNN in the last couple of years, with NY Times recently declaring Nashville "the nation's 'it' city." "Historically we have worked for large national companies attracted to our technology and talent," said Bill Tallent. "But the dynamics of Nashville are generating interest for our services from both large and small companies here. As a native Nashvillian, I knew it was only a matter of time before our community became recognized for technology and business acumen that exists here." About Mercury Intermedia Mercury Intermedia builds strategic, mission-critical mobile applications and platforms for major commercial media, enterprise and higher education institutions. Clients such as The New York Times, SAP, CNN, Fox News, Comcast, University of Mississippi, and Showtime have relied on Mercury to create top-rated mobile user experiences for iOS, Android, and Windows devices.
