BRIEF: School District praised for supporting military employees


Jan 30, 2013 (The Newberry Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NATALIE NETZEL STAFF WRITER NEWBERRY -- The Newberry County School District was recognized Monday night for its support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserves at the school board meeting.



Tim Lyden, principal of Prosperity-Rikard Elementary and Army Reserves Chief Warrant Officer 3, was recognized for submitting an application through the S.C. Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve. Lyden is also commander of the 208th Army Band, a reserve unit from Concord, N.C.

The district received the Above and Beyond Award and Lyden presented it to the district at Monday's school board meeting complete in his military uniform.


The award is recognized on behalf of Lyden's service and other district employees who must take time off to serve in the military whether through deployment or missions.

The annual award is given to a few select from the thousands of employers in the state. There were only 15 awards given this year.
