BRIEF: Elliott principal in Modesto put on leave for rest of school year

MODESTO, Jan 29, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The principal of Elliott Alternative Education Center in Modesto said she was escorted off campus Monday afternoon and placed on paid leave.

Julie Beebe, who has run the high school campus and independent study programs for 2 1/2 years, said she was told to be at her office for a midyear evaluation at 4 p.m.

The terse evaluation was read, followed by an order to hand over the keys.

Administrators followed her to get a box for personal belongings, then went with her to her car. Her district e-mail was cut off and her computer remotely logged off. She was told to have no further contact with students.

Beebe said there were no insinuations of misconduct or breach of ethics in her evaluation. She believes her abrupt dismissal stemmed from an e-mail she wrote to supervisor Mike Henderson protesting negative public comments made by district officials. Beebe is one of at least six administrators given notice their jobs would end June 30.

Some 791 students are served by Elliott programs, including students who left other high schools for discipline problems or because they needed to make up classes to graduate. It also serves pregnant minors and teen mothers, and several classes of special-education students.
