Provide teachers with laptops [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) IREFER to the report "Students may get laptops instead of textbooks" (NST, Jan 19) where it was stated that the Education Ministry is considering providing all students with laptops.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the education minister, said this after visiting the Daphne High School in Alabama, the United States, where all students are provided with laptops.

Before the ministry implements this, it should look into the lack of teaching equipment in schools which is hampering teachers from doing an effective job.

I know of urban schools where teachers are still using laptops and LCD projectors which were provided during the implementation of the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English in 2003. Imagine the quality of the teaching presentation using equipment which is beyond its lifespan.

Then there are schools which are still using the traditional overhead projector, obviously because of insufficient laptops and LCD projectors. I have come across teachers who have even resorted to using their own machines.

Giving a laptop to a student will benefit only one student whereas giving each teacher a laptop will benefit at least one whole classroom of students when the teacher uses it to teach.
