Police chief has their number

Jan 27, 2013 (Weatherford Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For one hour on Thursday, Weatherford Police Chief Mike Manning will be helping to stamp out Bingo cards rather than crime.

The city's top cop that day will be pulling numbered balls from a hopper for Santa Fe Health and Rehabilitation's first community Bingo games from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Asked how he was apprehended to serve as the celebrity puller for the center's inaugural games, Manning said, "Anytime that I can get out in the community that's a plus. I like to meet the people, and a place like this it's great and people usually appreciate any time that we show up. It's good to be in a pleasant environment rather than a controversial environment." Bingo will take place the last Thursday of each month at the center, located at 1205 Santa Fe Drive. The games are open to the public and there is no cost to play. It is entirely free (though donations to help support the center's social activities for residents are welcome).

Each player will leave with a box lunch (sandwich, chips and a cookie) and could also leave with a monthly $50 gift card via a drawing.

"It's to develop community relationships, to draw people into the building and get more people interested in our residents and to let them know what we do," said Santa Fe's Activities Director Carolyn Dunn said of the Bingo games. "Anyone can come in and play." Asked how many people she expected would take part in the games, Dunn replied, "I have no idea." Because lunches are provided, the center asks people planning to play to RSVP by calling 817-594-2786.
