BRIEF: Greality: Weld County students recognized for work in election

Jan 28, 2013 (Greeley Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Weld County Clerk and Recorder's Office on Friday recognized 80 high school students in Weld County who worked as election judges in November.

Speaking at Greeley Central ceremony on Friday, Clerk and Recorder Steve Moreno said so many students have shown interest since the program began in 2004 that his office must turn students away.

"This election was a historic election," Moreno told those at the ceremony. Weld hit a record 94 percent turnout for the 2012 presidential election. "You can say as an election judge, that you made history. You really did." Students honored at Friday's ceremony were from Briggsdale, Erie, Frederick, Greeley Central, Greeley West, Highland, Platte Valley, Prarie and Valley high schools, Frontier Academy, and one student was home-schooled.

"I have a challenge for you all today," said Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway. "Now that you've gotten involved, stay involved." Sami Dyer, 19, of Highland High School in Ault, said she decided to be an election judge for extra credit in one of her classes. But after her experience, Dyer said she'll probably be back for the next election.

"It was fun, I got to meet a lot of new people," Dyer said. "It was actually really easy." ___ (c)2013 the Greeley Tribune (Greeley, Colo.) Visit the Greeley Tribune (Greeley, Colo.) at Distributed by MCT Information Services
