EDITORIAL: Stately, powerful sign best for Warrensburg

Jan 25, 2013 (The Daily Star-Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Warrensburg City Council plans to deliver something long needed -- a memorable gateway sign identifying the city to the thousands who stop here to shop; to dine; to attend community festivals; to visit people; to attend games, entertainment and educational programs at the University of Central Missouri; or just to pass through.

What kind of sign will the council approve Answers may come when a committee meets from 7 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Western Missouri Medical Center.

Members might do well to consider that "the medium is the message," meaning the appearance of the sign is as critical as what the sign says. A sign made of cheap material delivers one type of message. A sign that flashes or lights up with daily changes delivers another. Still another message -- one that bespeaks durability, stateliness and power -- is found in UCM's signs. The metal-on-stone signs appear sturdy enough to withstand a tornado and suggest the university is a place with history, concerned with now and looking to tomorrow. Repeating the "UCM look" with the gateway sign would lend attractive cohesiveness to major community signage and show civic support for UCM.

Whatever is decided, to remember the medium is the message may help the committee as a starting point for picking a gateway sign.
