Smok'n Pig burglarized

VALDOSTA, Jan 23, 2013 (The Valdosta Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, thieves broke into the Smok'n Pig restaurant and stole cash and other items after cutting phone lines leading to the security system.

Smok'n Pig General Manager Ray Parr said employees arrived at the restaurant before 6 a.m. to begin cooking and discovered the theft. The restaurant was unable to open at 11 a.m. for its lunch service as investigators were still processing the scene, and all of the cooking and prep work was delayed as a result.

"They cut about 200 phone lines outside, which we know affected Flash Foods and us, and we're not sure who else around here, but it took down our security system," said Parr. "It took several hours for them to restore service since they cut so many lines." Parr said the thieves broke the lock off of a back door and broke into several locked offices, taking all of the cash the store had on hand in addition to other items. Parr said the sheriff 's department asked that they not be specific about the amount or about all of the items taken as the information is being used in the investigation.

Although the security system was disabled, Parr said the restaurant's internal cameras did record footage of the thieves, and investigators are processing the film along with a number of other items found in and around the restaurant that were used in the early morning burglary.

"The deputies got a lot of evidence and we feel confident they're going to find the ones who did this," said Parr.

The restaurant was open and serving customers by noon Tuesday. Parr added that the owners have taken extra precautions and are beefing up the security of the building along with their other area restaurants to prevent a similar incidence from occurring in the future.
