Jan 23, 2013 (Journal Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PEORIA The last remaining Blockbuster store in the area may soon be checking out.

An employee at the Blockbuster store at 3517 N. University St. told WGLO-FM radio station that the Peoria outlet would close Feb. 4.

The Denver-based video store chain has announced plans to close 300 locations around the country. Specific locations have not been released.

A Blockbuster spokesman said the 3,000 employees were informed about the latest closures on Friday.

The closings will will leave about 500 locations for Blockbuster, now owned by Dish Network. The chain closed 500 underperforming Blockbuster locations last year.

Founded in 1994, the company once dominated the video rental industry with 3,400 locations nationwide.

Colorado-based Dish Network in March 2011 bought the then-bankrupt video rental chain for $320 million.
