LatAm understands power of technology in education, Santillana says

Panama City, Jan 18, 2013 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Latin America is aware that new technologies can represent a "lever of change" in its educational systems, the director of digital business for the Spanish publishing house Santillana said here Friday.

Miguel Barrero told Efe that most Latin American governments are determined to equip their countries with infrastructure and technology, a sign they are "reflecting deeply" on the power of information and communication technologies.

Barrero took part in Panama City's international IT-in-education seminar organized by the Inter-American Confederation of Catholic Schools and Santillana, with the collaboration of the Inter-American Development Bank and the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The Spanish executive said that Latin America is taking serious steps to provide technical tools like broadband and wireless Internet, among others, as the first step toward future changes in education.

He said a great demand exists among educators for information on the potential of new technology.

In that context, he said, Santillana is organizing and taking part in international conventions, forums and seminars to try and become a "meeting point" for the continued improvement of educational systems.

Attending the event in Panama were around 150 education professionals from 20 Latin American countries. EFE nes/cd
