BRIEF: Conservation group expands preserve

ALFORD, Jan 18, 2013 (The News Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 15-acre addition to Tumble Creek Nature Preserve has been purchased by the Bay County Conservancy, expanding the ecologically valuable preserve to nearly 82 acres.

Situated near the intersection of Bay, Washington and Jackson counties, Tumble Creek consists of uplands with longleaf pine, turkey oak and wiregrass. A stream runs through the property amid sphagnum moss bogs and wetland vegetation, eventually connecting with the Econfina Creek, a critical local watershed, according to the organization.

To date, the Bay County Conservancy has permanently conserved 12 local nature preserves, totaling approximately 228 acres. The preserves are located in Bay, Washington and Walton counties.

This new, 15-acre purchase comes as Bay County Conservancy enters its 15th year as a member-supported, nonprofit conservation organization.
