Charlotte-area businesses land on unpopular list

The local Better Business Bureau has released its annual list of Charlotte-area businesses with the most-unanswered complaints in 2012.
One business, Charlotte-based Appliance Repair, made the BBB's worst-rated list three times, and two were on last year's list, according to president Tom Bartholomy.
Last year, consumers filed 13,142 complaints with the BBB against businesses in the Southern Piedmont area of the Carolinas.
The businesses on the latest list:
--Home Appliance Repair, Coachwood Lane, Gastonia: Tops the list with 12 unanswered complaints last year. Consumers paid $150 to $927 for appliance repairs that they say were not done properly, or not done at all, according to the BBB. This business also topped the 2011 BBB list. The business does not have an obvious website; a phone number for Home Appliance Repair listed on the BBB website went to a recording that said the number is not available at this time.
--Waterford Square Apartments, Waterford Square Drive, Charlotte: Nine residents filed complaints in 2012, all of which went unanswered by the apartment manager, according to the BBB. The complex now has a new manager. A phone message left at the main office was not returned.
--Handyman Company, Hickory Boulevard, Hickory: Eight homeowners filed complaints focusing on poor quality work and lack of follow-up, with owner Chris Robinson not responding, according to the BBB. Robinson was on the BBB's 2011 list under a different business name. Handyman Company does not have an obvious website; a phone number listed on the BBB website is out of service.
--Historical News Journals, Northcove Road, Cornelius: The BBB says 25 customers filed complaints about orders and refunds going unfilled by the company, which sells books that are compilations of historical newspaper articles. Eight complaints remained unanswered, according to the BBB.
Owner Chip Dolfi told the Observer that money that should have gone to filling book orders had been misdirected. Dolfi said since July, employees have called several hundred customers to apologize for the problems. Dolfi said his business also provided "thousands of dollars" in refunds, and sent 800 books -- including duplicates -- to inconvenienced customers.
"If anybody hasn't gotten a book or a refund, call me," said Dolfi, who is at 724-328-8205. "I'm glad for the opportunity to rectify the last eight (complaints)."
--Carolina Color Solutions, Cloverstone Circle, Cornelius: Eight unanswered complaints focused on poor quality work and lack of follow-up, according to the BBB. The business does not have an obvious website; a phone message left at the number on the BBB website was not returned.
--Southend Car Store, South Boulevard, Charlotte: Eight unanswered complaints involve customers being quoted lower prices than what they were charged, and repairs taking longer than projected, according to the BBB. The phone number listed on the BBB website is out of service.
--Appliance Repair, Mandy Place Court, Charlotte: Five unanswered complaints were over repairs not done properly or at all, according to the BBB. Owner Benny Stafford was on the list in 2011 and 2007.
The BBB's phone listing went to a recording calling the business "Authorized Appliance Repair." A message was not returned.
--Advantage Debt Solutions Inc., South Tryon Street, Charlotte: The debt-relief service has five unanswered complaints citing lack of documentation for payments toward balances, according to the BBB. The toll-free number listed on the business website is not in service.
--Aryca Solutions LLC, S.C. 160 West, Fort Mill, S.C.: Debt-collection service has nine complaints, including five that are unresolved. One phone number listed on its website goes to a different business; a different toll-free number was answered by a woman who said the business is Aryca Solutions, and then hung up.
--MZ Auto Inspections, New Hope Road, Belmont: Auto repair service has five unanswered complaints focusing on poor quality work and lack of follow-up, according to the BBB. The business has no obvious website; a number listed through the BBB site is not in service.
--Medrano Express, South Boulevard, Charlotte: Five unanswered complains focus on lengthy shipping times for the company, which also provides wire transfer services to foreign countries, according to the BBB. There was no answer at the Charlotte number listed on the business website.
--Henry's Auto Service, Newell Farm Road, Charlotte: Four unanswered complaints involve poor quality work and lack of follow-up, according to the BBB. A phone message left for the owner wasn't returned.
