Smarr Named Vice President of The NHP Foundation

NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The NHP Foundation (NHPF) is pleased to announce that Jamie A. Smarr is the newly appointed Vice President of its Affiliate/Acquisition Program.

"The Affiliate Program is key to solving the country's affordable housing challenge", said NHPF Chief Executive Officer Richard F. Burns. "Jamie has a demonstrated track record of identifying local partners, and we look forward to his developing more of those relationships through the Affiliate Program." NHPF's Affiliate Program works with local affordable housing initiatives by offering finance, asset management, resident services, and fundraising support. With affiliate programs in place in Washington, DC and Falls Church, Virginia, NHPF is seeking to identify local partners in other housing markets that will benefit from the Affiliate Program.

Prior to joining NHPF, Mr. Smarr served as the Executive Director of the New York City Educational Construction Fund, engaging in public-private real estate development partnerships for the school system in the City of New York. Smarr was also a senior aide to the New York City Schools Chancellor, responsible for capital planning and public/charter school development. During his earlier tenure as Director of Tax and Zoning Incentives for New York City's Housing Preservation and Development Department, Smarr created more than 1,500 units of affordable housing using incentives to encourage public/private housing development. Mr. Smarr also served in the New York City Mayor's Office and with the Boston Housing Authority.

"Jamie's background makes him ideally suited to lead our Affiliate Program", said NHPF's Chairman Ralph F. Boyd. "We are confident that, under his guidance, the Affiliate Program will expand to other markets where the critical need for safe and affordable housing remains unmet." Headquartered in New York City with offices in Washington, DC, NHPF was launched on January 30, 1989. NHPF is a publicly supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded to preserve and create affordable multifamily rental housing for low- and moderate-income families and seniors. In addition to providing safe, clean and affordable housing to its residents, NHPF has a robust resident services program known as Operation Pathways. Through partnerships with major financial institutions, the public sector, faith-based initiatives, and other nonprofit organizations, NHPF owns 22 residential properties with more than 4,300 housing units in 11 states and the District of Columbia.
