Former Mueller Elementary School touted in video ad before February auctionJan 11, 2013 (The Wichita Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A closed elementary school in northeast Wichita would be a "great ... property for an existing or growing church," according to a video advertisement posted this week by J.P. Weigand & Sons. An auction of the former Mueller Elementary School, 2821 E. 24th St. North, is scheduled for noon Feb. 15. Wichita school board members voted last month to sell the school, one of four elementary buildings closed last spring after the district opened new schools and redrew attendance boundaries. The two-minute YouTube video ad shows the exterior and interior of the 57,000-square-foot building, which features a library, kitchen, gymnasium and large classrooms. It sits on about four acres in northeast Wichita, near 24th North and Hillside. The former Mueller school will be the second district property auctioned within the past year. The former Booth Elementary School, 5920 E. Mount Vernon, was auctioned in July to Hope International Fellowship, a nondenominational Christian church that paid $83,000 for the property. Mueller, an aerospace and engineering magnet program, moved to the former Isely Elementary building, 2500 E. 18th St., when Isely's program moved to a new building in Bel Aire. The former Mueller school is one of several in the district's inventory. Other vacant buildings include Blackbear Bosin Academy (formerly Price Elementary) in a neighborhood near 13th and Woodlawn, and Longfellow Elementary, 2116 S. Main, which the district keeps for emergencies. Three other elementaries -- Bryant, Emerson and Lincoln -- closed in May as part of cost-cutting measures related to new school boundaries. The former Metro-Boulevard Alternative High School, 751 George Washington Blvd., also is vacant since the program moved to the former Northeast Magnet High School. As with the Booth auction, the district has the right to refuse any potential buyer of the former Mueller school, said Julie Hedrick, director of facilities for the Wichita district.
