MTN to invest USD 70mn in Uganda in 2013 [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MTN to invest USD 70mn in Uganda in 2013South Africa-based telecoms operator MTN Group, plans to invest USD 70mn in Uganda this year, following a USD 80mn investment in 2012, I-Net Bridge reported. Among the investment plans is the deployment of a fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) network in Uganda in the next few months. The East African country currently has no high-speed 4G network, but Saudi Arabian Smile Telecom has started rolling out a LTE network and expects it to cover the capital Kampala by the end of March and to near national coverage in 2014. More than 90% of the internet connections in Uganda are mobile and telecom firms are striving to capture a bigger share of the country's growing data market. According to World Bank estimates, in Africa a 10% rise in broadband penetration is linked to a 1.3% increase in economic growth. MTN is the biggest mobile operator in Uganda.
