Unlocked Iphone 5 Available At Safaricom for Ksh. 109,999

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Safaricom finally has the iPhone 5 in stock. Unlocked (free to use on any network) 16 GB versions of the phone are now available in Safaricom shops at KSh. 109,999. CIO East Africa announced in September last year that Safaricom had plans to stock the device. (http://www.cio.co.ke/news/main-stories/safaricom-to-stock-iphone-5,-unofficially) The iPhone 5 is the thinnest iPhone and comes with a high definition 4 inch Retina display, a 1.2 Gigahertz dual core A6 processor, an 8 megapixel back facing camera with HD video recording and a front facing 1.2 MP camera and iOS 6.

The device achieves about 6 to 8 hours of battery life on 3G or WiFi and 10 hours of battery life on video playback.

The mobile operator however doesn't have an official partnership with Apple and relies on Vodafone to supply the phones. Vodafone through Vodafone Kenya owns 40 percent of Safaricom.

Orange Kenya is the only provider with a partnership with Apple to supply iPhones in Kenya, Kenya joined the countries where the iPhone 5 is officially available on December 21st 2012, with Orange Kenya stocking the phone. Sales of the device on Orange have appeared lacklustre with little marketing in place. The 16 GB iPhone 5 is retailing at KSh. 79,999 and the 32 GB at KSh. 89,999 at Orange Kenya, through they are presumably locked to Orange in Kenya.

Safaricom however has the highest number of iPhones in Kenya, numbering at between 12,000 to 15,000 in February 2012. The firm, despite facing good demand, has had a challenge stocking enough iPhones to boost this number due to availability of the devices from Apple.
