BRIEF: KXAS sports guy Matt Barrie to depart

Jan 10, 2013 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- KXAS/Channel 5 announced late Wednesday that Matt Barrie, one of the station's sports anchor/reporters, will leave the station effective March 3 to take a position with ESPN. Barried had been with NBC 5 since 2008.

"Matt is a terrific journalist who brought fantastic energy to the NBC 5 sports team. We're sorry to see Matt leave, but wish him success in his new network job," Susan Tully, NBC 5 vice president of news, said in a statement. No replacement has been named yet.

While at NBC 5, Barrie has won Emmy, Edward R. Murrow and National Association of Black Journalist awards (the latter for this). He shared a Lone Star Emmy last year with photojournalists Noah Bullard and Peter Hull for "The Voice of Knox City," a feature about Lyndon Baty, an immunosupressed teen in the small West Texas town of Knox City (about 80 miles north of Abilene) who attends school via a robot called the "Baty Bot" and is a huge -- and opinionated -- sports fan. This is well worth the seven minutes-plus it takes to watch it.

Barrie also won Emmys in 2012 for Sportscast (shared with Bullard) and for on-camera talent in both sports anchor and sports reporter categories.
