Momma Goldberg's serves up variety with a side of comfortJan 09, 2013 (The Anniston Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- As a big fan of subs, sandwiches and hoagies, I had pretty high expectations for Momma Goldberg's Deli in Jacksonville. I can happily tell you all of those expectations were exceeded with one bite of a Turkey Delite sandwich. I watched the sandwich artist steam bubbly mozzarella cheese on top of a honey wheat bun and then add a juicy turkey breast. I was then asked if I wanted my sandwich "all the way," which includes spicy brown mustard, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and Momma's sauce. The combination of all these ingredients was, in short, delightful. I was told one of Momma Goldberg's most famous menu items is a side order of Momma's Nachos. So naturally I wanted to try them. I was presented with a warm mound of Doritos chips topped with hot pepper cheese and optional jalapeno peppers. I instantly could see why this is a crowd pleaser, especially in a college town. If you love Doritos as much as I do, you're asking yourself why you never thought to top them with cheese years ago. The warm chips and a kick of melted spicy cheese make the perfect side dish to any item on Momma Goldberg's menu or perhaps eaten on its own as an afternoon snack. Momma Goldberg's Deli is a chain restaurant which originally opened its doors in Auburn in 1976. Now the restaurant serves customers in 20 locations across four different states. Patrick Cash, co-owner of the Jacksonville restaurant, said the eatery has been drawing a lot of attention from Jacksonville State University students and locals since its opening in September. Cash said he's expecting the restaurant to gain even more popularity during this year's college football season. "I think more people will know that we're here and that we cater and can provide food for tailgates," Cash said. The restaurant is located across the street from JSU's football stadium, which Cash said had an influence in his decision to open the restaurant in Jacksonville. Cash said he was in the midst of deciding whether to open in his hometown of Rome, Ga., or the town where his father and sister earned their college degrees. "We found a lot directly across the street from the stadium and it was too good to turn down," Cash said. Cash said the deli is frequented by Auburn fans who reminisce about their college years and eating at the original Momma Goldberg's. Cash, an Auburn graduate, said he can relate. "I'd eaten many a meal at Momma's Goldberg's," Cash said. The deli offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, wraps and desserts. There are also several beers in bottles and on tap.
