Australian university taps ZBB system for zero-carbon building

Jan 09, 2013 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ZBB Energy Corp. will supply a microgrid energy control and storage system to an Australian university, the company said Tuesday.

The system will provide power for the engineering and information technology building on the campus of the University of Technology Sydney. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The Menomonee Falls company's system and batteries will provide continuous power and regulate a variety of different power energy sources, including solar, wind and a fuel cell.

The system is aimed to be "a permanent, zero-carbon demonstration platform," said Ray Clout, the university's research laboratories manager. "The installation is meant to showcase and use multiple types of renewable energy generation units for the university's Broadway Building to offset the use of the utility grid right in the middle of the city, while emitting no carbon outputs." The goal is to demonstrate the reliability of the system for the university, and for it to become a model for areas in Australia and other parts of the Southwest Pacific where there is no utility service and there is interest in moving from diesel generators toward renewable energy sources for power generation, he said.

ZBB develops and manufactures zinc bromide flow batteries as well as power and energy control systems.
