Gamers Host 3rd Annual Six Day-24/7 Marathon for the Prevent Cancer Foundation

Bethesda, Md., Jan 04, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Who says that video gaming can't be for good Independent speedrunning group "Speed Demos Archive" will be hosting their third annual six-day nonstop video gaming marathon from January 6-12 to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to cancer prevention and early detection. The annual marathon, titled "Awesome Games Done Quick," (AGDQ) has raised more than $200,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation over the past two years. Last year's marathon raised enough to fund a two-year cancer prevention research grant as well as funds for the Foundation's vital education, advocacy and community outreach programs.

For AGDQ, over 110 of the site's community members will travel in from all over the country and in some cases, the world, to participate. Last year's marathon had over 3,700 donors from around the world, with an average gift of around $25.The entire event is streamed live on their website, with thousands tuning in from all corners of the globe to see the action and show their support. Viewers can also comment in real time during the over 115 different games that will be played, including classics such as Super Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong, as well as newer games like Mass Effect and Starcraft 2.

"This event continues to exceed our greatest expectations each year," said event organizer Mike Uyama. "Raising enough money for a two-year Prevent Cancer Foundation research grant last year was a huge accomplishment for us, and we just hope to be able to come close to what we raised last year." Speed Demos integrates a variety of different fundraising challenges into their event--winning donations get to choose game routes, character choices or difficulty levels. Members also face off against one another in exciting speedrun races. AGDQ continues to be a unique and widely viewed event every year, topping each previous year's record by tens of thousands of dollars.

The group will be raffling off over 100 great prizes for viewers who generously donate throughout the marathon. The event is open to the public--for more information or to watch, visit the group's site: http://marathon.speeddemosarchive.com.
