Women handle Eagles

Jan 04, 2013 (The Jamestown Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Jamestown College women's basketball picked up its first Association of Independents Institutions victory on Thursday night.

The No. 11-ranked Jimmies received a balanced effort all the way around as 12 players scored at least four points in a 71-51 win at Northern New Mexico.

"It's nice to see our kids bounce back a little bit from what happened the other day, but on the other hand it's a marathon, not a race," JC coach Greg Ulland said. "I felt like we worked harder tonight than a couple of nights ago, but at the same time, it's a continual process and we have to get better." Alex Buck had a team-high 12 points in the win, which improved JC's record to 14-2.

"Overall we played a lot of kids and we saw some good things from those kids off the bench," Ulland said. "Buck is getting back to just about 100 percent healthy and that's good to see." The Jimmies had a solid defensive effort right from the start, surrendering only 17 points in the first half to lead by 18 at halftime.

"Defensively in the first half I thought we were pretty good only giving up 17 points, but in the second half we got a little lackadaisical," Ulland said. "They had a kid score 21 points and that's just unacceptable in our defense.

That kid was 5-foot-6 guard Nisa Duran, who went off for 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Northern New Mexico, which dropped to 5-12 on the season.

"One of our foundations is just communication in transition and we let her get free and get a couple of easy look," Ulland added. "That's the frustrating part. When we get a little tired we don't communicate as well." Bridget Schuneman was also in double figures with 10 points, while Maggie Seter and Megan Pold each had seven points. The Jimmies visit Johnson & Wales at 2 p.m. Saturday in Denver.
