Police say dog needed to subdue Layton driver

LAYTON, Jan 03, 2013 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man accused of leading police on a vehicle chase New Year's Day was taken into custody when he was bitten by a police dog.

The man is identified as Collin Andrew Currie, 39, according to a news release from the Layton Police Department.

Currie was booked into Davis County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, evading, driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer and leaving the scene of an accident.

Officers found evidence of drug use in the vehicle Currie was driving, as well as evidence indicating he may have been involved in prior vehicle burglaries and other financial crimes, the news release states.

Around 3 : 3 0 p . m . Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the scene of a hit-and-run accident near 1600 W. Antelope Drive in Layton. The suspect's vehicle hit two other vehicles while traveling west on Antelope Drive.

No one was injured.

The driver of one vehicle hit called police and gave a description and plate number of the suspect's vehicle.

It was determined the suspect's vehicle was stolen from the Ogden area. Layton police spotted the vehicle around 1200 N. Main St. in Layton and a short pursuit ensued back to Antelope Drive, where police attempted to stop the vehicle.

Currie drove off and the vehicle was found unoccupied at Oak Stone Apartments in Clearfield.

Police found Currie a short time later in a field south of the apartments and ordered him to stop.

Currie drew a handgun, pointed it at his head and told the officer to shoot him, the news release states.

Currie did not point his gun at officers, but continued to disobey demands to drop the weapon.

He was subdued by a police dog that bit his arm. His handgun was later found to be a BB gun.
