2013 job workshops begin today

Jan 02, 2013 (Jackson County Floridan - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Marianna One Stop Career Center will begin its 2013 employability workshops just three days into the new year.

The January workshops begin today , with a session called "12 Keys to Success." All of this month's workshops begin at 3 p.m. and are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

On Monday, Jan. 7, the workshop is "Common Job Search Mistakes to Avoid." On Tuesday, Jan. 8, the session is titled "Tools for a Successful Job Search." On Thursday, Jan. 10, the workshop will focus on setting goals.

The following week starts with a Jan. 14 session. The Monday workshop focuses on how to use social media in looking for a job.

The Tuesday, Jan. 15, session is titled "What Employers are Looking For." The Thursday, Jan. 17, workshop involves a mock interview.

There will be no session the following Monday, Jan. 21, because the office will be closed in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Tuesday, Jan. 22 session focuses on effective networking skills.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, the workshop will center on surviving a layoff.

The last week of the month starts with a Monday, Jan. 28, session on I nternet security.

The Tuesday, Jan. 29 session is titled "Completing Applications." The final offering of the month will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, and will focus on job search tips.

In addition to these workshops, the One Stop will also feature an ongoing program this month called "5 Steps to Rapid Employment." Those sessions will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon from Jan. 7-17. To participate, you must start at the beginning of the sequential sessions. It is a 40-hour program that involves a detailed resume-building process, with on-line and classroom instruction from certified teachers.

One Stop Business Service Manager Kenny Griffin said the " 5 Steps " program is well worth the investment of time. There is no cost associated with it or any of the workshops. All it takes, he said, is commitment.

"It's a meticulous marketing program," Griffin explained. "All of us are self-employed, whether we like it or not. You have to market yourself to potential employers, because, bottom line, you are your own business. You must continue to add to your skills and showcase them. The economy is such today that we constantly have to upgrade ourselves and our resumes. This program helps you do that. If you discover in the process that there's a skill set you don't have but that you need, we may be able to help you obtain it or point you in the right direction. It's really worthwhile to do this." The latest available unemployment numbers in Jackson County are from November, 2012, and the numbers are positive.

In 2011, the November unemployment rate was 8.1. In November 2012, the rate was 6.5 percent . Jackson County has a workforce of 22,449 people, according to state records used by One Stop. Of those, 20,987 are working and 1,462 are without a job.

The next big employment opportunity in Jackson County will likely come near the end of the first quarter of 2013 as Home Source International starts up its textile line. The company produces bedding and other textiles, as well as wooden and metal furniture lines. It has about five people on board already, working in the metal furniture division, but the bulk of the expected jobs must wait until building upgrades are complete and ready for employees to start in the textile division. The company expects to hire well over 100 people when at full force.

The time lag gives job-seekers plenty of time to start building their skills and resumes at One Stop, where Home Source International will be going to find its workers.

Call the One Stop office at 718-0326 for more information about the center's workshops and other opportunities available throughout the year.
