New Mayor Marylou Powers shares her goals for city of Galt

Jan 02, 2013 (Lodi News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Marylou Powers, appointed to the Galt City Council in 2010 before winning a seat in the election that same year, was chosen by her peers to serve as the city's mayor for 2013.

She took over the gavel at a meeting earlier this month. But she has been an active resident since 1996, when she moved to Galt along with three generations of her family. She has two children and four grandsons, two of whom attend schools in the Galt area.

In addition to her service on the city council, Powers previously served as a planning commissioner for eight years and as the vice chairwoman on the Measure R Oversight Committee.

She is the executive director for South County Services, which operates in Galt.

When first elected, Powers said her goals for the city included strengthening the local economy by bringing more jobs to local residents and more revenue to the city; ensuring responsible growth by properly planned growth that will improve the quality of life in Galt; and working to guarantee funding and support for fire protection and law enforcement, according to her online profile.

Powers recently answered a series of questions from Galt City Hall reporter Jennifer Bonnett.

What are you most looking forward to for the city in 2013 Continued economic growth with the development of downtown for much-needed family activities, Walmart and the Cal Waste Recycling plant for local jobs and city tax revenues.

What are the top three characteristics you believe a mayor should possess A genuine concern for the community; receptivity to constituent comments and concerns; growing and on-going communication with co-council members and officiates of other communities in an effort to further enhance our city.

Former Mayor Barbara Payne was active and very visible during her two-year term as mayor. What should citizens expect from you when it comes to leading Galt How might your leadership be different than Payne's There are many leadership styles.

Before becoming mayor, I was a two-term planning commissioner serving one term as chair; by appointment I participated in the Sacramento Transportation Agency, and various other commissions and committees as the vice mayor.

As director of South County Services in Galt, I am in frequent communication with a multitude of city, county, state and federal agencies, with much knowledge crossover into city responsibilities.

Living and working in our small community affords me the opportunity to converse with my constituents on a daily basis, in the market, post office, at work or with scheduled office appointments.

With a continuing respect for the voice of Galt, I will remain open to new ideas while preserving the small-town ambiance of our community.

What is the best method for constituents to communicate with you By email, phone, in the office or conversation around town.

There are a lot of changes going on in Old Town. How, as mayor, will you ensure the city retains its downtown charm while moving forward with projects once a part of the now-defunct Redevelopment Agency All conceptual projects for downtown are reviewed and approved by the city council with historical Galt style in mind.

How do you feel the completion of the Central Galt Interchange Project will affect the city The exchange has already eased traffic congestion, ultimately facilitating east-west accessibility.

During your time on the city council, what single project are you most proud of, and why More than one comes to mind.

Our Independence Day event festivities have become a free Galt event for team spirit, family fun, music, county fair-style competition (baked goods, quilts, specialty canning) and fireworks.

Another source of pride was authoring a city ordinance that allows Galt nonprofits to use our facilities twice a year for no fee as our way to recognize their hard work.

What book are you currently reading As an avid reader, I usually have a couple going at once, novels to classics (with the occasional how-to) and recent periodicals. I just finished "A Farewell to Arms," "The Art of Racing in the Rain" and am now on "The Piano Teacher." Contact reporter Jennifer Bonnett at
