AME Info, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, technology briefsDec 31, 2012 (AME Info - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- MICROSOFT WARNS IE USERS AGAINST ZERO-DAY FLAW: Microsoft has warned users against a zero-day vulnerability affecting older versions of Internet Explorer, which could allow attackers to gain control of Windows-based computers to host malicious websites, Cnet has reported. The remote code execution vulnerability affects the way the browser accesses memory, allowing an attacker to use the corrupted PC to host a website designed to exploit the vulnerability with other users. "Microsoft is aware of targeted attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer 8," Microsoft said, noting that more recent versions of the web browser, including IE 9 and IE 10, were unaffected. LG ESCALATES PATENT DISPUTE WITH SAMSUNG: LG has filed a request for an injunction against one of Samsung's flagship products, escalating its worsening patent dispute with its South Korean rival, AFP has reported. In the injunction, LG Display accused Samsung of infringing three of its patents on LCD panels used in the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet computer. "Through this action, LG Display seeks to completely stop the sale, manufacture and importation of the infringing Samsung product," the firm said. The company also said it would request compensation amounting to $933,000 per day in the event of continued non-compliance. The two companies have been in a patent row since September when LG Display, one of the world's top flat-screen TV makers, filed suits against Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display for allegedly infringing patents on seven organic light-emitting diode (OLED)-related technologies. ACER SEES TOUCHSCREEN LAPTOPS TO DOMINATE PC MARKET: Acer has said Windows 8 touch-screen laptops are eventually to dominate the PC market, although the operating system may take a while to win over computer users, Digitimes has reported. An internal research by the Taiwan-based PC maker showed that after using a product with a touch-screen for more than 20 minutes, users naturally gravitate to touch, Acer president Jim Wong told the daily. "This indicates that touchscreen control is an irreversible trend," he said. Windows 8 is a "new system that consumers must learn and the learning process will prevent the operating system from taking off quickly," he said.
