TV rings in 2013 with parties, alternative programs


Dec 30, 2012 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Celebrate AND dance to the music while enjoying the new year from the comfort of your sofa this New Year's Eve. No muss, no fuss, and there's a lot less traffic that way.



The networks are throwing lots of televised parties, and everyone is invited. However, if party hardy is not what you had in mind, some cable channels plan to provide alternative programming.

Here goes: NBC, channel 2, cable 9 9-10 p.m.: "New Year's Eve With Carson Daily" -- Live from Times Square in New York City, this special will include appearances by Oklahoma's Blake Shelton and other "Voice" coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green (who talk about their own New Year's Eve parties), as well as Amy Poehler, Donald Trump, Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon and Angela Kinsey. The show will ring in the new year with Train and "The Voice" winner Cassadee Pope along with some of the best musical performances from the past year, including Justin Bieber in Mexico City, Coldplay from the Paralympics Closing Ceremony, Madonna's halftime show at the Super Bowl XLVI, Adele from Albert Hall, The Spice Girls from the Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony, Psy from the MTV European Music Awards, Beyonce from World Humanitarian Day and David Guetta from Rio De Janeiro. It continues from 11:30 p.m. Monday to 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.


ABC, channel 8 7-9 p.m.: "New Year's Rockin' Eve Celebrates Dick Clark" -- Fergie and Jenny McCarthy celebrate, through clips and memories, the legendary television personality and producer Clark who died April 18.

Then Ryan Seacrest will host "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2013" from New York starting at 9 p.m. with Carly Rae Jepsen and Neon Trees joining headliner Taylor Swift performing live in Times Square, and then continuing with the countdown from 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m.

On the West Coast, Fergie will host the performers including Edmond singer-songwriter Greyson Chance, Justin Bieber, Jason Aldean, Ellie Goulding and The Wanted, Brandy, Flo Rida, Karmin, OneRepublic (with frontman Tulsan Ryan Tedder), Pitbull and more.

PBS, channel 11 7 p.m.: "Live From Lincoln Center: One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch." The New York Philharmonic, conducted by Paul Gemignani, rings in 2013 by celebrating the life and work of the late Marvin Hamlisch. Edmond native Kelli O'Hara, Joshua Bell, Raul Esparza, Michael Feinstein, Maria Friedman, Josh Groban, Megan Hilty and Frederica Von Stade will perform selections that span Hamlisch's amazing music for stage and film. Audra McDonald will host.

Fox, channel 23, cable 5 11 p.m.: "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips, along with rock group Lighthouse and Carmen Electra will welcome the new year in "New Year's Eve Live" starting at 11 p.m. Monday from Las Vegas.

The special will also include a performance by "The X Factor" winner Tate Stevens plus New York Times Square's ball drop.

MTV, cable 39 11 p.m.: MTV has invited Ke$ha, Ne-Yo, Sean Kingston, Rita Ora and Conor Maynard to perform on "MTV's Club NYE 2013" from Times Square in New York City. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Jenni "JWOWW" Farley and "Money From Strangers" comedian Jeff Dye will be your hosts.

BBC America has a "Doctor Who" marathon from 8 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday on cable 176 and PBS's "Great Performances" will celebrate with the making of The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" at 9 p.m. and the film "Magical Mystery Tour" at 10 p.m. on channel 11.
