Photography 2012: B&H Photo Video Reviews Breakthrough Cameras, Lenses and Gear
New York, NY, Dec 28, 2012 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) --
B&H Photo Video Pro Audio, the world's largest camera retailer, is pleased to share with the photography community excellent reviews of this year's breakthrough cameras, lenses and gear.
With 2012 drawing to a close, let's take a few paragraphs to mention some of the more notable cameras and photographic accessories that debuted in 2012. Not simply new items, but products that really impressed photographers and/or blazed a new path for their specific company or for photo technology in general.
Nikon D4 DSLR Camera was announced early in 2012 and offers numerous improvements over the Nikon D3s. The biggest distinctions are that the D4 has Photo and Video Live View Modes, and shoots Full HD 1080 Video at 24 and 30 frames per second.
In early February, the D800 and D800E were announced, after much anticipation. The Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera is an ultra-high resolution DSLR with a full-frame sensor in a body significantly more compact than the D4. With 36.3MP (7360 x 4912) resolution, it was and remains Nikon's highest-resolution camera, designed for professionals and enthusiast for whom image quality is of the utmost importance.
On the Canon side of the fence, the Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera was unveiled in October of 2011, and it combined the best aspects of its two predecessors (the speed of the 1D Mark IV and the image quality of the 1Ds Mark III) to create its best professional DSLR to date. With its newly developed full frame 18.1MP CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 5+ image processors, 14-bit A/D data conversion and dual CompactFlash card slots, the 1D X can shoot between 10-14 frames per second depending on shutter speed, ISO and focus settings.
It wasn't just Canon and Nikon having all the fun this year. Sony released the SLT-A99 Digital Camera, with its translucent mirror technology, to much acclaim. The translucent mirror eliminates the delay of the reflex mirror action and allows for a dual autofocus system in which light goes to both the AF sensor and the image sensor at the same time. This is a huge breakthrough and allows for fast focusing speed and increased burst rate. The translucent mirror is of particular significance when shooting video because it allows for high speed continuous autofocus during Live View shooting. Additionally Sony also released Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera is an extremely high 24.3Mp resolution camera. With a generous assortment of compatible E-mount lenses to choose from, photographers can bank on the NEX-7 to handle every photographic opportunity.
Make a quick stop in the land of point-and-shoot and it's easy to see that the big breakthrough of 2012, in terms of compact cameras, was sensor size. And setting the bar about as high as it can go, Sony has recently announced the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 full frame compact digital camera with an f/2.0 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens and a full frame sensor as big as the best pro DSLR's is getting a lot of deserved attention.
The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera impressed photographers in 2012, especially with its design elements. The E-M5 took notice with its fast autofocus, ultra-durable, magnesium-alloy body and intuitive electronic viewfinder.
2012 has played host to numerous camera and lens announcements, many of which are improvements over past products, while others are entirely new designs full of intrigue. The main innovative duty of lenses is to keep up with the cameras themselves and to capture greater detail and information. Lenses are also being designed for more specialized applications, most notably the burgeoning HDSLR-video field. No matter the specific application of a certain lens or camera, manufacturers are continuously rounding out their lens lines, to appeal to all types of photographers working in a multitude of settings.
With more choices than ever among digital camera gear, camcorders, and other consumer electronics gear, consumers who are looking for the right gift for loved ones can easily be overwhelmed.
