How to get rid of that Christmas Tree

Dec 27, 2012 (The Porterville Recorder - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- There are fewer ways to dispose of that real Christmas Tree this year, but it is still a fairly easy process.

Residents can drop off their Christmas tree at the City Corporation Yard, 555 N. Prospect St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Sunday through Jan. 13, said Wendy Ferguson, solid waste superintendent for the city.

Ferguson said all ornaments and tinsel must be removed from the trees.

Residents may also make use of their green yard waste container to recycle trees. Trees must be cut into lengths no longer than four feet before being placed into the green container. The trees will be collected on regular green can collection days.

Ferguson asked that residents don't just cram the tree into the container.

Tree stands, both metal and wooden, must also be removed.

Residents can also take their trees to the county run Teapot Dome Landfill, located approximately five miles southwest of Porterville on Avenue 128. Trees there will be accepted free of charge through Saturday, Jan. 12.

Trees can be dropped off from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. After Jan. 12, there will be a charge.

Ferguson said trees collected will be sent to Tulare County Compost. She also said there are fewer and fewer trees dropped off every season. "It's gotten smaller and smaller. Everybody's going to fake trees," she said.

She also stressed that residents should not try to burn the trees in their fire places.
