Pacheco girls surrender halftime lead to Broncos

Dec 21, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pacheco's girls basketball team can look at a few aspects of its game that were exposed in a 40-33 loss to Dos Palos and apply them in practice.

But the Panthers can't replicate the non-stop pressure defense of DP guard Kayla Hall.

"Kayla's the kind of player that doesn't give up, and when she sets her mind to something, she does it," Dos Palos coach Megan Grijalva said. "That's what makes her a great defender." Hall met Pacheco point guard Sam Rodriguez near half court for each Panther possession, forcing turnovers and generally disrupting Pacheco's offense.

"[Hall] put a lot of ball pressure on us and we hadn't seen that in a while," Pacheco coach Michael Perkins said. "We responded better than we responded earlier in the year to that. But we saw some things we didn't like, and we'll go into practice over tomorrow and Friday after we play Waterford Thursday, and we'll work on that." Despite Hall's pressure, Pacheco (5-6) led 21-20 at halftime before DP took a lead in the third, then closed the Broncos' lead to 31-28 on a Geor-cion Hymes layup.

"It felt like we're hanging in there with a good team," Perkins said. "I think Dos Palos is a good team. Not bad by any stretch. We feel like we're hanging in there with a good team, and if we can eliminate a few of the mistakes that we're making right now, we can win this." But Dos Palos (7-3) stretched its lead back out on the strength of Emelee Croninger, who didn't score until hitting one of two free throws early in the fourth, but scored 7 of DP's 10 fourth-quarter points.

DP's Hall and Pacheco's Rodriguez each scored 14 to lead all scorers.

DP's win came a few weeks after Dos Palos defeated Pacheco 54-37 in the silver bracket championship of the Los Banos/Pacheco Tournament.

"It's nice, because we play our league opponents twice," Grijalva said. "So it's nice to change things up and get the same team but a different look, and a different game plan for the second game -- whether it was successful or not."
