Group protests assault rifles at Cabela's

SCARBOROUGH, Dec 21, 2012 (Portland Press Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A small group of protesters gathered outside the parking lot of Cabela's on Friday morning to protest the outdoor outfitter's sale of assault rifles like the one used in the Newtown school shootings.

The group of five people held signs including ones that said "Cabela's, please stop selling assault rifles," with a picture of an assault rifle with a line drawn through it.

"We're asking them to please consider what they're doing when they sell these weapons," said Steve Swift of Vassalboro, who describes himself as a Buddhist. "They are family people. We want them to consider these weapons are not necessary to deer hunting." As the group stood at the corner of Haigis Parkway and Payne Road, some passing motorists honked their horns in support, while others made angry gestures.

A Cabelas's store manager referred questions to the company's corporate office. A spokesman there could not immediately be reached for comment.

The store enjoyed a steady stream of customers during the late morning as holiday shoppers meandered through aisles of outdoor gear. Much of the activity centered around the store's gun counter, which displays a wide selection of handguns and rifles. Most of the long guns are traditional hunting style rifles, with a few specialized target-shooting models and assault-style rifles.
