BRIEF: Stanislaus bomb squad responds to suspicious bottle at Orestimba High
NEWMAN, Dec 19, 2012 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Stanislaus County bomb squad on Wednesday responded to Orestimba High School, where a staff member found a suspicious bottle on top of a car. The bottle turned out not to be a bomb.
Staff contacted Newman police, who made the decision to call in the bomb squad, said Jack Mayer, assistant superintendent of the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.
The parking lot and area streets have been cordoned off, Mayer said. Most of the students are off campus, as it's finals week at Orestimba. But several students and staff aren't able to get to their cars.
"I suspect that there's going to be no explosive device," said Mayer, adding that the call to the bomb squad was made as a safety precaution. Mayer described the bottle as plastic, with a bit of liquid in it and paper towels and wires sticking out of it.
"It almost looks like a poor man's vase, or flowers that could have been left for somebody," Mayer said.
We will update this story as further information becomes available.
