Community Kitchen calls for food donations for holiday meals

Dec 19, 2012 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Community Kitchen is asking the community to donate food this month to help it provide a Christmas feast for those in need.

"Last Christmas we served and distributed over 1,100 meals and we are anticipating a similar need this year," said Vicki Pierce, the kitchen's executive director. "Food donations are essential to providing a quality meal, so we hope the community will again help us make the holiday season a little brighter for those in need." People wishing to help can donate boneless hams, green beans, canned cream soups, tropical fruit cocktail, dessert pies and cookies.

The Christmas Day Meal will feature glazed ham, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, tropical fruit salad, rolls and homemade pies and treats. It will be served at 1515 S. Rogers St. from 3 to 6 p.m. A vegetarian option will also be available. Warm carry-out meals will also be served at Community Kitchen Express at 1100 W. 11th St., 3-6 p.m., and reheatable holiday meals will also be distributed at both locales.

Kitchen staff and volunteers will also prepare more than 120 meals for delivery to the home bound by the Area 10 Agency on Aging, and the kitchen will team up with the Hoosier Hills Food Bank to distribute bags of groceries to those in attendance.

Food donations can be dropped off at 1515 S. Rogers St., 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Financial contributions and grocery gift cards are also welcome. Financial contributions can be mailed to the Community Kitchen, P.O. Box 3286, Bloomington, IN 47402.

"Over 30 volunteers will assist the kitchen staff in preparing and serving meals on Christmas Day and all of our volunteer shifts are currently full," Pierce said. "But those interested in volunteering a shift in 2013 should call 332-0999 and schedule a shift." If you want to deliver meals to the home bound, or would like to request the delivery of a meal on Christmas, call Laura Kray at the Area 10 Agency on Aging at 876-3383 (ext 553).
